Stannard maple farm, date unknown

Three Generations:

Maple Farming

in Roseboom

Maple syrup farming thrived as an industry in Roseboom for over a hundred years, often passed down between families. As technology evolved over the years, so has maple syrup farming to ease the process in upstate New York’s long winters.

Instead of sap dripping from metal taps into a wooden bucket that was carried to a nearby sap house for boiling by the farmers and their family members, farmers today like Warren Stannard now use plastic tubing which carries the sap directly from the tree to the sap house.

As in the past, farmers sell their syrup at farmers’ markets, to other farmers, and at local stores. Although there are fewer maple farmers in the area today, lots of syrup still comes from local farmers and carries on the tradition.

We had one store

that had syrup for 90 years.

It sounds unbelievable

but we actually did.

We used to

tap 500 trees,

now we tap 3,000.
