Schools in Roseboom

Unlike today, in the early 1900s, many kids trekked several miles to one of several one-room schoolhouses in the Roseboom area. Sometimes students were lucky enough to catch the town “school bus,” which was a car driven by a local community member. One teacher knowledgeable in all subject areas taught 10 to 15 students of different ages at the same time. However, by around 1947 Roseboom’s schools closed and sent students to Cherry Valley. Nevertheless, school stories and memories remain, including Roseboom’s old schoolhouse which lies on the bend next to the cemetery.

There were one girl,

[Grace Higgins], she was determined to have an education. I used to draw milk…and she used to ride up with me on milk cans

in the morning to get anyway she could to

high school.

The little schoolhouse is nice. We sat there, the teacher had her desk at the front of the room. She

had all eight grades in the one-room schoolhouse we were in.
